No matter how much writing I have accomplished during the week, each Thursday, I am greeted with the feelings of disappointment in myself. Oh crap! I only wrote…I only accomplished…I only. Only might as well be a four letter word in my book.
So, each Thursday (when I remember), I will share a resource that I could not live without. We will call this “Dissertator’s Thursday.”
Dissertator is the Terminator of dissertation writing. Dissertator is for those of us who lifted books instead of weights in high school. When other girls dreamed of being homecoming queen, lady Dissertators were more content reading about women’s rights (yeah, I was totally that girl). So when you need that little surge of energy after a long week of work and writing, become a Dissertator.
For the first ever “Dissertator’s Thursday,” I am recommending the book, The Synonym Finder by J.I. Rodale. This book has 1,361 pages of synonyms. Even in the age of Google, I always find better synonyms in Rodale’s ginormous book than I can online. It is my antidote for writer’s block. At only $12.91 on Amazon, that is one cheap antidote for the poison of writer’s block.
This book is an excellent resource for any student or writer. I first used Rodale’s book in my AP English I class in high school. My English teacher was easily one of the most terrifying and best teachers I have ever had. She recommended that we buy this book when we went off to college. I agree with Mrs. K, The Synonym Finder should be on the bookshelf of every writer or student (high school and above).
So while I just threw away my Merriam Webster’s dictionary, I will never get rid of The Synonym Finder.
And guess what? Now I know 20 other synonyms for only. Take that, Thursday!
